A Historical Tour of Italy

Of all the beautiful locations in Europe that call the holiday traveler, Italy is a trip like no other. An amazing blend of Greek, Roman, Etruscan, and European culture, Italy has a history and culture unlike any you will find anywhere else in Europe. Nestled between the Adriatic and Aegean Seas, Italy has famous and not so famous locations waiting to be discovered and enjoyed.

For a first time visitor, or one who has visited many times, there are sights that remain on the top of everyone’s must-see list. Here are just a few of them.

Starting on the West coast, visitors should take in the beautiful mountain villages and cities. Stopping in Sorrento is a fantastic idea. Sorrento is a coastal city that provides the visitor with access to the ancient cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, two of the most popular of all Italy tours. These two Roman cities were tragically destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. An active archeological program continues in these two cities, reintroducing their culture and way of life to the rest of the world. Take a walking tour of these cities and enjoy all the beauty that surrounded the Roman Empire.

Just across the bay from Pompeii and Herculaneum lies the island of Capri. Capri is known for vineyards, beaches, and the beautiful Blue Grotto. Hop into a small fishing boat and allow yourself to be transported by sea into the side of the island. Within this sea-cave lies a small body of water with a pure white sandy floor. The light filters in through the cave opening giving an eerie blue glow to the water. With tour guides singing romantic Italian songs, this is an experience like no other. While on the island, check out the chair lift to the top of the mountain for great views of the bay while grabbing a quick snack or even a glass of limoncello, a local drink originating on the island.

italyIf you like water and romance, no trip to Italy is complete without a visit to Venice. Soak in the history and architectural wonders of this amazing floating city. Take a ride on a gondola, eat gelato in St. Mark’s square, and explore the fantastic Doge’s Palace. For a party atmosphere, check out one of the many beaches located in the area. Venice has a beach and nightlife not found anywhere else in all of Italy. Catch the excitement, or keep it low key, the choice is yours.

If Michelangelo is your favorite, no tour of Italy would be complete without a trip to Florence. The Accademia del Arte houses some of Michelangelo’s most famous works. From his statue of David, to many works of art and stone, this museum is unlike any found in all of Italy. Walk just a little bit from the museum and visit the Duomo, the grand cathedral of Florence. Take a shopping trip on the Ponte Vecchio, the oldest bridge in the area. The Ponte Vecchio is great on all Italy tours, in that it has a rich history of its own. After several hundred years in existence, the shops and tradesmen on this fabulous location are willing to haggle and make a sale, giving the buyer a splendid Italian experience.

Of course, no trip to Italy would be complete without seeing the capitol: Rome. Rome is home to Vatican City and St. Peter’s Basilica. Visit this amazing structure, complete with the Sistine Chapel, crypt, and library. Take a tour of the Spanish Steps, eat gelato in the Piazza Navona, or visit the Monastery where cappuccino originated. The Roman Forum, the birthplace of democracy, is a must see. Imagine battles and fetes of strength in the Coliseum. With so much to see and do, a tour of Rome is a must.
